Mass Shooting and Video Game Violence: Here we FUCKIN’ go. AGAIN!

Written and submitted by Adam Majid.

Heads up: I am a GAME DESIGNER. This means that I design, and essentially make video games, board games, tabletop games, RPG games and even LARP games. For a living. The digital gaming or video games industry, like every industry has its fair share of problems, and troublemakers and issues – most prevalent in 2019 was loot boxes and EA’s “surprise mechanics.” That was the case until the past weekend where there were two mass shootings in El Paso, Texas (22 dead) and Dayton, Ohio (9 dead).

Historical Context to Current Events

Yes. This is de-ja-vu. Historically, we go back to 1999. We go back to the first High School Massacre: Columbine. For those that want the detailed version, please go here. During that “first official” mass shooting incident the politicians and people who jumped on to the bandwagon blamed video games, they blamed the music and shenanigans of Marilyn Manson. They blamed a “trench-coat mafia.” They blamed Goths and the so-called “Emo-Kids.” Those in power blamed everyone and everything they could to avoid actually addressing and dealing with the issue in a real and meaningful way. The rhetoric that has been ritually resurrected and disproven by research since 1999 is that “violent video games are causing mass shootings.

Shit Shoveling American Politicians

Unfortunately, the Video Games industry is once again becoming the target of witless, unintelligent, empathy-lacking and politicians divested of common sense. These politicians immediately resurrect their rhetoric and literally power-level the transmission of it to the public via mainstream media. They state that a much-loved form of entertainment and art is the cause of such senseless murderous rampages. The level of stupid on display I won’t go in to. You can read it, watch and view it for yourselves here, here, here, and from the internationally recognized American Comedian at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

The Yet Again Disproven Resurrected Rhetoric

Each and every single one of these politicians continues to ignore the fact that these mass shooting incidents are terrible tragedies caused by ready and easy access to firearms and not the fault of the video games industry. It’s the same tired disproven rhetoric from the 1990s that goes like this: Video Games glorify violence and mayhem and rape and murder and killing. Video games psychologically influence the Youth (Just the Youth) into committing such acts of senseless violence and carnage. That Video Games are the “training tool” that makes the Youth into killing machines.

American politicians it seems cannot make up their mind about the millennial generation: – Last Friday, they were the oversensitive, snowflake generation. On Monday they are so desensitized to violence that they are mass murderers and killers. This, coming from the country and government that has sent countless of its young men and women to die as the world’s policeman since well…forever. Color me reactionary, but I don’t think Video Games were responsible for World War 1, World War 2, the Vietnam War, The First Gulf War, or 9-11.

What Does Research Say?

I’ll link a few articles but I think this article from VOX summarizes things very clearly, and succinctly.

The chart says it all. The revenue shows clearly the consumption rate of Video Games. South Korea and China SURPASS the USA and have nowhere near the same level of violent gun deaths. It’s not video games that’s the problem. It. Is. The. Guns. ONLY the USA stands as an outlier where violent gun deaths is a major issue with a high level of Video Game consumption. I’d say “May the Force be With You,” but someone would then claim Star Wars is what caused the fall of a Republic, and a high number of heads, hands, arms and legs being cut off.

Going as far back as 2011, researcher have already disproven the rhetoric. The United States Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia ruled that the so-called “research” failed to prove “violent video games cause minors to act aggressively.” His ruling also stated that “[n]early all of the research is based on correlation, not evidence of causation, and most of the studies suffer from significant, admitted flaws in methodology.” Further research in 2014 has also proved that there is no positive correlation or causation between violent video games and aggressive assaults and homicide. For something a bit more recent, this was published in 2019 where the title says it all: – “Violent video game engagement is not associated with adolescents’ aggressive behavior: evidence from a registered report.

The Bottom Line

I don’t know how much clearer I can make this for the idiots out there: – Video Games DO NOT cause of mass shootings. If you have a modicum of common sense, intelligence and integrity as a human being you should be able to recognize this. Fortunately, most of the public at large, have acquired a modicum of common sense to go with the dose of intelligence they were born with, and are not buying the shit that is being shoveled.

How do you do effective, legal gun control? I don’t have an answer for the USA because it gets mired in history and law due to the Second Amendment of the American Constitution. But the steps in the right direction cannot be taken if the people in power continue to ritually resurrect the same tired rhetoric and shift the blame to Video Games instead of dealing with the issue that American access to guns is the problem.

It is also worth mentioning than while the politicians are the ones shoveling out this power-leveled horseshit, the media plays a role in this as well. They are not bothering to do any kind of research or fact checking or anything to independently verify whether what is being said has any truth to it. This is the current state of media coverage in the USA on this topic for the past week.

These politicians are taking on a much-loved medium that has brought happiness, joy, laughter and togetherness to countless millions around the world. If video games were the training grounds that these politicians make them out to be, there should be thousands of backyards filled to the brim with crushed turtles and broken bricks. The streets would be filled with brawling Tekken, Street Fighters and other martial artists. This is to say nothing of the number of FIFA-Footballs, NBA-Live Allstars, that would dominate the pitches and courts of professional sporting venues. And of God of War players would no longer call male children by their names but simply refer to them as “Boy.”

Here’s hoping somebody helps the politicians “level-up” their game and “git-gud” at gun control legislation.
